The Art and Beauty of the Movie Poster Book

This project allowed for me to research the art form of movie posters in their most basic principles, historic elements, and through the work of some of their most iconic designers. Movie posters have transcended decades, yet the art form has gone through many waves since the beginning. The process included the compilation of information from online sources, electronically creating the visual components displayed below, developing the layout for this information with Adobe InDesign, and finally putting it all together to work cohesively into one design system. One of the best resources we have as designers is the ability to engage with the work that already exists, learn from it, and be inspired. As I strive to be among the greats of movie poster designers one day, I am constantly in awe of the creativity and intention that is apparent in the world of poster design.

Since all the text and images were provided, this project was truly an experiment of problem-solving and decision-making. Other genres of design allow decision-making in a very wide scope, in which items can often be removed at the designers own discretion; but book design offers a very different reality. As a designer in this role, you are not in charge of creating a system from scratch, but rather creating a system around the developed elements: text and image. The art is in the details, and the deliberate placement motivates the function of the information itself. While this project was for a class assignment, its development instilled essential knowledge of the interworking of designs systems and layout creation.

The Crazies Calendar

This thirteen page personal project was created in Adobe Illustrator before being printed on a RISO Printer. In this process, I designed each page AND facilitated of the printing process. Since the RISO printer works with overlayed sheets of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, each page took four times the amount of time than a normal print to develop and many, many sheets of paper. Each of the twelve main pages were created in reference to one of the members of my family, as they often find themselves as inspirations for my work. From dinosaurs for my nephew and fishing imagery for my grandpa,
I got to challenge myself to design pieces that felt
reminiscent of them while within the constriction of a limited color palette. While printing on a RISO printer, one must pay attention to color switches and cleaning rollers while also accounting for the time it takes each color to build up before spreading the vibrant, desired amount on a page. While time consuming, this project taught me valuable detail work while adding a new resource to my print toolbox.
